How to compress a PDF on iPhone

Set a cap of 10, 15, 25, 35 or 50 MB, or a custom size, then preview the pages before you send.

FileSway Extract pages screen in dark mode: one 100-page PDF, processed on this iPhone with originals unchanged, and a list of pages to keep.

Quick answer

Last updated

  • FileSway compresses one unlocked PDF on your iPhone to a cap of 10, 15, 25, 35 or 50 MB, or a custom KB or MB size.
  • One PDF is free, and a multi-page PDF can still produce more than one result file on the free plan.
  • If one file can’t fit, FileSway can split it into numbered parts and keep page order.
  • You preview the original against the finished pages, because compression can make fine print harder to read.
  • Compressing or splitting can affect forms, links and signatures, so check the result before you send.
  • Document processing does not upload the PDF to our servers, and PDF tools run on your iPhone.

Compress one PDF

Add an unlocked PDF. One PDF is one input. A multi-page PDF can still produce more than one result file on the free plan. There is no account. The capture shows Extract pages, where you choose pages to keep. The size cap is a separate control.

  1. Open FileSway and add the unlocked PDF from Files.

  2. Choose a size cap of 10, 15, 25, 35 or 50 MB, or type a custom size in KB or MB.

  3. If one file can’t fit, split it into numbered parts. Page order is kept.

  4. Preview the original against the finished pages. Fine print can get harder to read.

  5. Save to Files, share, or export. Your original stays unchanged.

Make a PDF smaller on iPhone for email or upload

When an email or an upload form states a size, set that cap in FileSway: 10, 15, 25, 35 or 50 MB, or a custom size in KB or MB. These are FileSway’s caps. A destination can use a different rule, and FileSway does not promise the file will be accepted.

If one file still can’t fit, FileSway can split the PDF into numbered parts and keep page order. A cap on the whole submission still counts the parts together, so read the instructions you were given. Preview the original against the finished pages, and check forms, links and signatures. Your original stays unchanged.

Pick a limit

The PDF presets are 10, 15, 25, 35 and 50 MB. Anything else, including a smaller target, is a custom KB or MB size. These are FileSway’s caps, not a list of what a site will accept. FileSway does not promise every PDF can hit every number.

Photo limits are a different control, from 100 KB to 50 MB. Compress a photo to a size limit.

Split into parts when one file is too big

If one file can’t fit the cap, FileSway can split the PDF into numbered parts and keep page order. A multi-page PDF can still produce more than one result file on the free plan.

A size cap may apply to each file or to a whole submission. Splitting does not get around a limit on the whole submission, because the parts still add up. Read the instructions you were given. FileSway does not decide whether the destination will accept the PDF.

To keep fewer pages, type numbers or ranges on PDF pages. Merge PDF is the other direction. FileSway shows what’s included in Free and Pro before you convert.

What compression changes

Compressing or splitting can affect forms, links and signatures. Open the finished file and try those before you send. Preview the original against the finished pages, because fine print can get harder to read. FileSway does not promise a quality level, or that the file will be accepted.

Searchable text is separate. Searchable PDF uses on-device OCR and needs FileSway Pro. OCR can contain errors. A photo turned into a PDF starts on Photo to PDF.

Built-in iOS options and their limits

The Files app can store, copy and share a PDF. Recent iOS versions do not offer a control for a cap such as 10 MB, or for a custom KB size. Apple may move these menus.

  1. Open the PDF in Files.

  2. Tap Share if you want to send the file as it is.

  3. There is no field for a target size. The PDF goes out at the size it already has.

When an app is better

  • You were given a cap, including 10, 15, 25, 35 or 50 MB, or another KB or MB size.
  • One file still will not fit, and you need numbered parts.
  • You want to preview the original against the finished pages.
  • The PDF has forms, links or signatures to check after compression or a split.
  • You want searchable text. On-device OCR is FileSway Pro, and it can contain errors.

How do I make a PDF smaller on my iPhone?

Add the unlocked PDF in FileSway, choose 10, 15, 25, 35 or 50 MB or a custom size, preview the original against the finished pages, then save or share. One PDF is the free job, a multi-page PDF can still produce more than one result file on the free plan, and your original stays unchanged.

How do I reduce PDF file size on iPhone?

Add the unlocked PDF and choose 10, 15, 25, 35 or 50 MB, or type a custom size. If one file can’t fit, FileSway can split it into numbered parts and keep page order, but a cap on the whole submission still counts the parts together. Preview the pages and check forms, links and signatures before you send.

Can I compress a PDF on iPhone for free?

One unlocked PDF is free, without searchable OCR. Several PDFs in one job need FileSway Pro, a one-time $14.99 purchase in the U.S. There is no subscription. Searchable OCR is Pro, and it can contain errors. Restore Purchases is available, and you do not need an account.

Will compressing a PDF make it blurry?

It can make fine print harder to read. Preview the original against the finished pages before you export, and check forms, links and signatures, because compressing or splitting can affect them. FileSway does not promise a quality level.

Can I compress a PDF without uploading it?

Document processing does not upload your files to our servers. PDF tools run on your iPhone. Cloud file providers, Apple purchases and restore, and links you choose to open can still use the internet.

What if the PDF still won’t fit?

Split it into numbered parts if one file is the problem, or keep fewer pages by typing numbers or ranges. If the cap covers the whole submission, the parts still count together, so you can try a smaller custom size and preview again. Check the instructions you were given.
