Step by step

How to scan a document with iPhone in FileSway

Document scanning works on supported devices. You can also add pages you already have from Photos or Files. Each step below matches a moment in the recording.

  1. Open FileSway

On the Convert screen, tap Scan document. Scanning works on supported devices. You can also add files from Photos or Files.

  2. Scan the page

Hold your iPhone over the page. FileSway finds the page edges and can capture it automatically, or you can tap the shutter. Tap the checkmark when you're done. Even light and a flat page keep the text sharp.

  3. Check the PDF

The scan appears under Your files and Convert to switches to PDF. If the file has a size cap, set a file-size limit or compress the PDF afterward.

  4. Review and save

Tap Review, then Convert and verify, then save to Files or share. Your original stays unchanged.

The recording is trimmed for length: pauses between taps were removed and the status bar was tidied. Every tap you see is a real tap, in the original order. In this example the scan came out at 1.8 MB; your file size will depend on the page.

Scan or photo?

Why scan a document instead of taking a photo

A photo of a page captures the desk, the shadows and the angle along with the paper. A scan is about the page itself.

  • Cropped to the page edges

The scanner looks for the four edges of the paper, so the result is the page, not the table around it. That is the blue outline in the recording.

  • Saved as a PDF document

When you scan a document with iPhone in FileSway, it lands as a PDF under Your files, the format many forms and offices ask for when you send paperwork.

  • Ready to shrink and send

Because the scan is already a PDF inside FileSway, you can compress it, keep only certain pages, or set a file-size limit before it goes anywhere.

Better scans

Tips for a cleaner scan

Edge detection works best when the page stands out from what's behind it.

  1. Use even light, without a dark shadow across the lines.
  2. Keep the page flat. A curl or a fold hides letters.
  3. Put the page on a surface that contrasts with the paper, so the edges are easy to find.
  4. Hold still until the type is in sharp focus.
  5. If you plan to run OCR with FileSway Pro, check names and numbers afterward. OCR can contain errors.
